On Saturday 21st April, 2018, DAQVAH Charity Foundation, an organization that caters for the poor and the needy, organized a charity marathon in Freetown. Hundreds of participants took part in the event, comprising of individuals, families, organizations and institutions who ran the race with the same goal in mind – to raise funds and awareness on the plights of widows in Sierra Leone.
This event attracted some renowned Islamic personalities in Sierra Leone such as Dr. Ibrahim Salieu Kamara, Sheikh Mohamed Marrah, Sheikh Hafiz Wurie Barrie, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Bundor, Sheikh Yazid Rashid, Haja Halimatu Abdullah, and more. Non Muslims were also in attendance to grace this historic event.
The 10 kilometres walk/run started from Lumley at around 8:30am and ended at Aberdeen Roundabout around 9:30. registered participants were dressed in T-shirts with inscriptions “#ISTANDWITHWIDOWS”
A special medical team from the College of Medicine Muslim Jama’ah, did medical screening for some participants at almost no cost.
At the finished point, (Aberdeen Roundabout) statements were made by different personalities; a fundraising session climaxed the occasion.
In his statement, Dr. Ibrahim Salieu Kamara congratulated DAQVAH Charity Foundation for undertaking such a walk in support and recognition of widows in Sierra Leone. He said, Allah recognizes the widows and encouraged everyone to always support widows, he said widows are often neglected in society.
In his statement, Sheikh Mohamed Marrah praised and commended DAQVAH Charity Foundation for organising such an event to recognize vulnerable widows. He called on every kindhearted person to join hands with the foundation to support widows and orphans, as there is a great reward from Allah for that.
The CEO and Founder, Alhaji Abdul Rahman Jalloh said that, the widow walk event was a culmination of weeks of preparation and fundraising. Adding that this event forms part of the activities that will lead to the national grand launching of the Reach the Unreachable with $1 or Le 10,000 Project, which will be on the 28th April, 2018, with the theme, “Sustainable Strategies in Tackling the Problems of Widows In Sierra Leone”.
